Charlotte Church Showcase

I should have written this a week ago but just bare with me ....

Charlotte Church has given me alot in the years I've been a fan of hers. A love cheeky vimto, beautiful classical music and solid proof that the Welsh, especially fellow Cardiffians, are phenominal singers.

I've never seen her live before so I was more than excited when I won tickets to see her showcasing her new album 'Back to Scratch' at London's Pigalle Club last week. Starting with a accapella Latin chant, a clear nod to her classical roots, it's obvious her voice is as strong, if not stronger, than before. The maturity in her voice was echoed in the music and the sophisticated lyrics were complimented by the accompaniment of a string section as well as the usual guitars and backing vocalist. It was so refreshing to hear no autotuned generic pop that is dominating the charts of late. Gone is the pop image and record label pressure and what is left is the voice and the music. Highlights from the set include the ballad "Story of Us", written for her mother, even though she called her a "pain in the ass" and the title track "Back to Scratch" that sounded better live than on the record. Let's be honest this is the way it should be. During the 6 song set she admitted feeling nervous and even joked "You'd think I'd be used to this after 12 years... Christ," but hopefully this album will solidifty her as a force to be reckoned with in the industry. Looking forward to the release of the album to see what else she has up her sleave

When I first heard about the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico I didn't instantly think ....let's do a photoshoot! Vogue Italia obviously did. I think they are some of the most emotive images I've seen in a while and I really think they have stepped it up a notch. The rest of the spread can be viewed online I'm sure. The mix of natural textures and garments reminds me of the shoot I did with Anna a month or so ago. Ours being slightly less dark than Vogue Italia and theirs is a bit better...maybe. The colour palette of greys, blues, purples and blacks is really appealing to my aesthetic. I'm going to shut up now and just let the photos speak for them selfs.

Back to Bournemouth.

I'm currently sat on the 12.35 fast train to Weymouth on my way back to Bournemouth after three weeks in London. Despite the having to get up at 7.30 daily and spending the budget of a small African country on the tube, I really enjoyed the work experience with William Green. I would highly recommend doing work experience to everyone just purely for the hints and tips I found I picked up during my short stay. I would have loved to stay longer as we had finished the final toiles for the collection and the process of creating the final garments was beginning as I left. [ side note - why does it feel like it take about 10x longer to do them at uni? I blame Cape Club as it is my main source of socialising and distraction let’s be fair] The collection, inspired by The Deadliest Catch, features nods towards the nautical theme yet there are no obvious nautical clichés to be seen here, it’s more rough fisherman than camp sailor.

Unless this all changes in the next two months before Fashion Week, in which case you can ignore this bit entirely, the colour palette mainly consists of blacks, grey, heavily washed denim and hints of bright yellow. The yellow waxed cotton dungarees are a personal favourite along with the lifejacket inspired hooded smock. The cut of the leg on most of the garments is slim with large patch pockets on front and back. To compliment the fisherman theme, the styling includes rucksacks, gill like pleats on collars and trousers and there was talk of a knitted beard which in my opinion would be epic. I’m looking forward to going down in September to help wherever I can with the final presentation at Fashion Week and seeing the final garments that had had my input. There is something really gratifying about seeing the finished product that I’d never truly appreciated before starting my degree.

This one was purely for how creepy it is.

Whilst in London, I found myself really looking out for details when it came to garment construction regardless of it’s overall aesthetic. This is purely because I think detail is what takes menswear to a new level. I spent most mornings on the tube subtlety staring at peoples clothes and picking out detailing that I really liked. Most of which I crudely sketched down as I’m far to chicken to ask City Bankers to take photos of their “interesting cuffs” and “quirky shoes.” This is purely because if anyone comes up to me on the tube and wants to talk let alone take photos I tend to want to run away. This happened last week when a woman came and sat next to me on the tube. All was well until she started waving to her own reflection. Then she proceeded to get angry when the reflection was waving back at the same time and not after her. Well something to that nature. I can honestly say, at the next stop, I got off the tube and went and sat in another carriage. Anyway, this street style of scouting out detailing was the best way to kill time on my hour and a half commute, that’s right everyone and HOUR AND A HALF, on the District Line. Not that I’m suggesting that Bournemouth locals aren’t super stylish but I doubt I’ll be able to do this back in Bournemouth.

I guess I’ll find out in less than two hours….

I havn't updated in a while because the relatives I'm staying with have recently moved house and so the internet isn't up and running yet. I'm staying in a really nice guest bedroom that has a massive glass window that I can stand next to and stare out of while I'm pondering life etc. anyway.....

Work experience at William Richard Green is going really well. I feel like I'm getting a good grasp of how to create a cohesieve collection and not just 6 seperate outfits that don't really have linkage. In comparison to my other placements this one is far more hands on which is great. We have been pattern cutting and toiling for his new s/s 11 collection and it's coming along really well. I've picked up some great little techniques that are used when pattern cutting that I'll definatley be utilising in my third year. Will is also a part of DJ duo Will and Joe Ask and so I now have techno beats perminantley drummed into my brain from it being played in the studio. It definatley beats Bournemouth radio stations that will only play Cheryl Cole, Sugababes, Lady Gaga and Jason Derulo on loop.

ohh a quick break to say a woman just came into the deli and ordered her self a cappuchino and a babychino for her kid. haha man i love london.

ok back to my life.. As well as work exp I've managed to squezze in a few gallery visits. I went with Anna to the Martin Margiela Exhibition in Somerset House. Highlights for me included the 8 shoulders, the oversized fireplace which was beyond confusing next to the giant XXXXXXXXXL mannequin. [ ok i can't remeber how many X's it was but it was massive]. I took some sneaky snap shots but ive forgotten to bring my lead to the deli so I'll upload them next time. One thing that seemed to annoy everyone is the wall where boxes would light up at random to show some of the Maison's work. I found my self running back and forth trying not to miss the lights and then annoyingly having to stand looking at something I did'nt like while waiting for another light to turn on.

I regressed to my inner child and went to the V+A Museum of Childhood. I enjoyed more than I'd care to admit to be honest. I did find some really nice detailing on the boys clothing and some puppets that had amazingly ornate designs so it was all justified honest.

And finally I went to the Private Viewing of Debut 2010 : AUCB Commercial Photography Graduate Show where I met up with Anna.

It was great to see work from our uni in such a professional setting. The standard of photography was strong but I felt there was definatley stand out images from the course and it was apparent who's work had a bit more depth and process behind it [Not that I could do any better of course] It was great to catch up with friends from uni aswell because I'm missing that creative vibe that AUCB has. After the viewing, being the creatives that we are, Anna, Nicola, Mike and I went to Garfunkel's and ate our own weight in Ice Cream, Chocolate Sauce and Custard. It was heaven

A few weeks ago I finalised some work experience at menswear designer William Richard Green. His diverse use of specialised fabrics [mainly jersey, leather and denim] really appealed to me because I think I will learn so much from him. I'm planning on utilising my time in London to go see some galleries and general arty things in my spare time. I'll be knocking on modelling agencies doors too.

Had a brain storming session with Anna about the shoot we have coming up in a place that I never remeber how to pronounce so will from now on be known as Dumbledore. She is off to London town this weekend to source more garments etc so in the mean time im going to attack some charity shops to see if they have any goodies for our shoot.

As my room is smaller next year I;m trying to get rid of as much stuff as possible so I'm photodocumenting my whole fabric cupboard in order for people to buy fabrics from me. Its going to take a while!

From working on my last styling shoot I've been asked to style another shoot for Charlotte Millerchip who is currently studying Model Making at the The Arts University College at Bournemouth. The main inspiration for the styling is Jack Wills and these are the two shots I've been asked to work from.

It will be blended with Charlotte's makeup skills as the boys will be made up to look like vampires. Will add pictures once the shoot is done

I was asked to style a shoot for Jacqueline Boulton who is currently shooting work for her final project of this acedemic year. The brief was quite loose all I needed to make sure was that the menswear would complement the vintage linegrie that the female model would be wearing. Not only did we take photos we recorded some video of the models in movement so that Jacqui could use it to get screen grabs to use in her project. I intend edit the film into a styling film that would compliment the final spread and will add variety to my progessing portfolio. Here are some shots of Jirka from the shoot. These images arn't final but give an idea of the final layout of the shoot

The styling was very minimal and mainly focusing on grey's and blues. I was aiming to portray a boyish feel which was continued through in the model posing which I also helped out with. Jirka moved beautifully infront of the camera so I was pleased to get him onboard for shooting my work at the end of this project.

Also for the shoot I created a wool shoulder piece which was worn by the female model. Who doesn't love a bit of textured goodness. There are images of the girl aswell that you can view on Jacqui's blog [credits at end of blog]

Currently filming and documenting our two day stint. Hopefully over the next few weeks I will edit it all together for your viewing pleasure.

Luckily I had the opportunity to model at LFW last Wednesday at the Matthew Miller Installation in the East Wing. Despite having to wake up at 5.30 to get to Somerset House by 9.30 it was totally worth it. After hair and makeup we were taken up to the installation space where we would be posing all day and having our photos taken by the world press. I was really impressed with Matthew's collection as it was one of the most cohesieve collections at the event and has alreay garnered alot of press attention. It has given me great perspective for my own work as I am designing menswear for my current project. Images have already appeared on many an affluent blog. It was quite tiring sitting on a box for 5 hours straight but there was many perks that cancelled that out. Fred Bulter and StyleBubble spent quite a while in the installation space but I was too chicken to approach them to let them know how big of a fan of theirs I was. Also we had unlimited G+T all day! I don't even like gin but I wasn't going to say no to free alcohol. As the day slowed down I was sent backstage to remove my makeup and then a beautiful blonde woman walked passed me. I couldn't believe my eyes when I realised I was stood next to Kate Moss. She is even more beautiful in real life which means there is no hope for the rest of us. Also spotted at the event was Mr Hudson, Luke Worrall and many an editor of the most prominant male fashion magazines aroundd the world. All in all an amazing day.

Inspiration and Persperation

Yesterday it all hit me all of a sudden while I was jogging what direction I wanted to go in for my Negotiated Studies. Hopefully it will be ok as I feel I've figured out a way of incorporating "The Girls" as well as my own aesthetics into both the Univeristy project and "The Girls" live project. Inspiration points are Traditional Welsh Costumes[got to have a bit of my heritage in their somewhere] Peruvian textile prints and Punk Art. Can't wait to collate them all together. There's going to be alot of knitwear, frayed denim, feathers and fringing.
My bed is completley covered in books from the library and I will be scanning in key images to share with you all very soon. Learning agreement is almost finished now thank god.

Stitch and Bitch

You know a day isn't going to go well when you have to wake up at 6.30 am. You know it's going to be worse when you wake up at 7.15 [the time the bus was due at uni]. Luckily I now live a stone throw away from the university and the bus company loves being reallly late. After a couple of hours on the bus, with a bus driver that mistook himself for a comedian, we eventually arrived at the Stitch and Knit Show at Alexandra Palace. Having been the previous year, I was looking forward to the exhibition as I had enjoyed it so much last year. Unfortunatley I found this year's exhibition to be a dissapointment. Gone were all the interactive pieces having been replaced with awful shopping channel promotional sellers. Another dissapointment was that Vivienne Westwood milliner was no where to be seen and that "The Painted Lady" had been moved to one of the smaller side rooms and therefore none of her amazing gowns were on display. When walking round the exhibiton there is alot of stimulating visuals to enjoy and appriciate but after a while it all seems to all look very similar. Having said that there were a few ideas and images I did enjoy and that did stick in my mind. The first was a collection of images were the artist created a grattifi style stencil of a male model and then layed the garments on top of the bodies

I feel that this is a far more intresting way of displaying garments in comparison to a conventional mannequin. These pieces did create a lot of intrest among the younger visitors of the exhibition and there was alot of cameras flashing around me as I took these pictures. I find the "thuggish" looks of the models is a great way of drawring attention to your work
The next piece that I loved was a massive ruff that was created from a variety of fabrics including old Dandy and Beano comics and little plastic army men.

I love a ruff at the best of times but this one had a great amount of charm to it and was a breath of fresh air amongst all the other stalls. It would seem silly not to include the next piece as it was the largest and possible most intresting piece at the whole event.

In the entrance of Alexandra Palace a giant kinnted boat was created. I loved the extra details that were included that included a little cat, losbters and fish. I think the best way to sum this up was a quote by Lottie "a lot of sheep must have gone into that!"

Although it wasn't a part of the exibition I was impressed with Alexandra Palace as a whole. The building it self is arguably more stimulating than alot of the stalls within the exhibiton. Not only is there fantastic architecture but it also houses a huge organ and a beautiful stained glass window.
I'm dissapointed that the event wasn't as good as last year and therefore alot of my fellow students have a bad impression of the event. Many were bored and felt that the trip had no relevance and many ended up sitting around for the majority of the time we were there. Honestly I think they can't be blamed and after a while I just sat around with a coffee waiting for it to be time to go back to Bournemouth. I feel that the trip would have been more suited towards costume students this year having seem some of their work and I can see that the trip would be benefitial to them.

To end a tiring day under flurescent lighting we had possible the most frustrating bus journey home ever. The less I day about that the better.

I'm really happy with the way the different colours all blend into the fabric. The dress is on theme with this season's paint splashing style that can be seen in September's Issue of Vouge UK. In true reflective writing style, I've decided to post my notes that I took while watching the podcasts about reflective writing on the Visual Directions website. I found it intresting that many of the speakers all used similar techniques and processes but all for different personal reasons. I believe that reflective writing can greatly aid future projects as well as personal development as I have always carried a small notepad in order ot jot down my thoughts and ideas as they come to my head. Not many thoughts fill my head sometimes [nothing to do with the blonde hair I can assure you] but I find that documenting initial thoughts can often start off a process which results in a much more interesting pathway to follow. After watching the videos I feel more inclined to write with more depth about my work and how it will affect me.

Vivienne Westwood meets James Lovelock on Video

"If young people don't listen to him, they're either stupid or they just don't care." So says Vivienne Westwood of James Lovelock, the maverick scientist and climate change guru that she interviews in this short film. A few months ago, I was invited to document this meeting, and you can read the full feature in this month's issue of Dazed, in which he reveals some very uncomfortable predictions about our future. Vivienne and I had first talked about this piece over a year ago, when she guest-edited an issue of Dazed, but James was too busy working on his next book at that time (The Vanishing Face of Gaia, published by Allen Lane). As such, it was exciting to be able to revisit the idea; as he approaches 90, James remains one of today's most influential thinkers and – despite the terrifying nature of his predictions (billions of us will die in the coming century due to climate change) – in person he is warm, engaging and a pleasure to talk to. Here is a short film (nine minutes or so) with snippets from that interview mixed in with some footage of Vivienne at the G20 protests, and some of her recent Active Resistance manifesto readings.

James Lovelock, speaking to Vivienne Westwood for Dazed & Confused: "One of the most harmful analogies that has been around recently is the 'tipping point'. Because it seems to imply that if only we pull back at this point then all will be well. It won’t. It’s already changed and it is changing. You see, in the last few years, ice that is in the north polar regions… it’s all going and the whole lot will be gone in between five and twenty years. When it dies, the amount of extra heat absorbed from the sun during the Arctic summer will be equivalent to all of the heat from all of the CO2 we’ve added to the atmosphere. So, suddenly the heating doubles and that’s something we can’t stop at all. We can’t do a thing about it... and that’s only one of many what we call ‘positive feedbacks’ in the system where the earth is moving rapidly to its hot state. We’re not going to stop it. So, what we should be thinking about is not trying to stop it, but preparing for the new world that is to come. It’s not a bad world but it’s not fit for seven billion people. There’ll be lots of places, not only on this island but all of the Arctic places – places like Canada, Siberia and so on – and we’ve got to make wherever we are a civilized and a fit place. It’s an enormous challenge and I hope that we’ll succeed. History tells us we might, you see, humans have been on the earth for a million years now and there have been seven events like the one about to happen during that time... the last one happened only 14,000 years ago. And when they happen, there are massive deaths... that’s were the legends of the floods come from, because the sea-level rose 120 metres at the last one – that’s huge amount. It flooded an area equal to the size of Africa as a continent. So, there were massive deaths during that occasion and on one of those – geneticists tell us – only 2,000 people survived. We’ve all come from that 2,000. It’s amazing, really."

Graduate Fashion Week

......fashionably late but hey ho!

I got the chance to dress models at this years Graduate Fashion Week in Earls Court 2 for students at my uni. It was a great experience as I got to dress a model in two contrasting styles of outfits and really felt I relished in the atmosphere backstage. This is my opinion of the two collections I dressed, which I felt were amongst the strongest of our group.

One of the collections was by Felicity Doubleday. I felt that the use of both menswear and womenswear gave Felicity the ablity to extend her exploration of her theme. This wouldn't have been possible if she had used only one or the other. The collection had an obvious military theme but was developed into a more sophisticated concpet through the use of beautiful tailoring and plaited accessories. Felicity gained a nomination for the ‘Jon Adams Portfolio Award’ for her portfolio at this years event. I really liked her chosen colour palette as I felt the blues and greys where nicely complemented by the contrasting burnt red. Well done Flick :]

The second collection I dressed was by Tamara Stevens. Taking inspiration from the vibrancy of Indian culture, Tamara's collection was visually exiting in both colour and sillouhette. The choice of fabric was vital with this collection and I feel that the contrast between the elegant fabric used in the cropped jackets and the corse fabric of the necklaces and the leather bag complement the theme perfectly. My favourite element of the collection is the varying styles of harem pants that are both elegant and perfectly on trend.

I feel that both collection succesful communicated the concpets and ideas of the designers and I love the balance between contrast and cohesion within the collections. I suggest checking out this website for images of all the exhibitors from AIB HERE!

I thought I would kick start off my blog with a post about one of my favourite American designers of the moment. Brian Lichtenberg's work fuses a futurism with an element of sexyness that makes his pieces stand out of the crowd. He has both mens and womens wear, which recently he showed at LA fashion week, that seem to echo LA life and can be seen on countless celebrities form Lindsay Lohan to Beyonce but most prominatley M.I.A. His womens wear can be seen on Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Beth Ditto as his clothes give instant originality due to his inivotive concepts.

I love his menswear line as it incorporates sportswear, patchwork and an effortlessness that shows off contemporary style to the maximum. I recently saw an amazing spread in the second volume of Japan Vogue Homme that I fell in love with instantly. A variety of influences from his homeland can be seen from where it is clear the BL has experimented with the architypal American jock stereotype, with his American Flag wrestelers uniform, and blended it with a more country male with the use of denim and leather. In typical BL he uses studs, sequins and zips to bring the LA to the outfits. Not content with just a succesful clothing brand he has ventured out into jewellery with Alex and Chloe and head pieces with Franc Fernandez which is sure to take Brian Lichtenberg to a new level with in the fashion world. I'm sure within a few years his work will become highly saught after all over the world.
